How do Motorcycle GPS Devices Work?
Most of us are familiar with automobile GPS devices. For example, if I ask you to think about GPS, what do you imagine? There's a good chance you imagine seeing a navigation screen locked into the dashboard of a car, or even a GPS system inside your phone. But what if you're using a motorcycle? There are GPS devices available to you, as well, and you can find them readily available from top brands like TomTom.
How does it work exactly?
First, it helps to understand how GPS works in the first place. GPS functions by utilizing pre-existing satellite networks in order to discover the position of a GPS device on the ground. Today's GPS devices take advantage of this and allow you to not only understand where you are, but show you where you are through the use of pre-downloaded maps. The result is a full-on navigation system that allows you to see where you are in the world, as well as where you're headed.
GPS systems can come with expanded features, such as voice instructions or live traffic updates. You might miss out on some of these features because of the nature of motorcycles. For example, automobile GPS devices can have a voice tell them where to turn so that they don't take their eyes off the road. If you own a motorcycle and plan on going on a road trip in the future, you can at least enhance your ability to navigate.
You can check out the Motorcycle GPS devices from big brands like Garmin and TomTom to get an idea of how much a motorcycle GPS will set you back. Expect to shell out a good $600-800 to buy yourself a quality GPS new from the company that sells them.
These GPS devices can then be placed on the steering of your motorcycle, near your speedometer, in order to provide an easy view of where you're headed. To get a better idea of what this might look like, check out a picture provided by TomTom. Keep in mind that that is a promotional picture. If you have a friend using a motorcycle GPS, ask them if you can take it out for a little spin or at least check it out before you buy your own.
Once you have GPS installed on your motorcycle, you can then use it to plan routes, find detours, gain your bearings, and bring you back home - hopefully safe and sound!
