How to Use GPS With Your iPhone

iphone gpsThese days, many of us imagine the iPhone and the GPS device as separate entities, brilliant examples of the uses of today's modern technology while not remotely the same gadget.  But it's entirely possibly to bring the GPS to your iPhone with a few simply touch-key strokes.
Since many GPS devices aren't much larger than an iPhone, this doesn't necessarily have to be a big transition.  If you love your GPS but can't carry it with you, using an iPhone to keep up-to-date on your position is entirely possible.  Here's how.

First, check out the GPS-powered Maps and Compass on your iPhone.  You'll find that this works very similar to the GPS in your car, in that you integrate maps of the world with your location in order to generate an accurate picture of where you're currently standing.  With Google Maps, you can also use your GPS location to view satellite pictures of the area nearby, as well as Google Street View, which provides 360 pictures of many developed areas.

Next, it might help to check out an App from one of your favorite GPS companies, like TomTom.  Essentially, this would allow you to turn your iPhone into a GPS device ready to be used in the car.  Instead of simply showing you your position, it would turn your iPhone into a car-ready GPS device better suited for driving.  The App comes at a fairly steep price as Apps go - $99 - but if you don't own a car GPS and do own an iPhone, it may be an inexpensive alternative.

Using GPS with your iPhone is fairly intuitive, and once you get the hang of it you'll probably find yourself using it quite often while traveling.  One key to using GPS effectively is to use it as a supplement for your navigation, not necessarily your sole navigation.  Why?  Although GPS devices can be very accurate, there is always a possibility that a map is outdated or that some other error was made.  Make sure the maps you're using are up-to-date and that you use your own common sense when using a GPS to navigate - whether you're in a car or out on the golf course.

Having your iPhone double as your car's GPS device can be great for reducing your clutter, as well.  If one device can handle both jobs for you, it's worth considering, isn't it?
