Three Tips for the New GPS Owner

Garmin Nuvi GPS

Okay, so you've finally made the plunge:  you've purchased a GPS system for your car and will deal with the credit card charges later.  Now, you're enjoying a new navigation system that tells you where to go without you having to worry about asking for directions or consulting maps.  But if you're a rookie GPS owner, you might find yourself running into a few snags along the way - and the GPS can't navigate you out of that!  Here are three tips for making sure your new GPS runs smoothly.

1.  Speed up "satellite lock."

Information Week helps you learn exactly how to do this:  when you first buy a GPS, it often needs to download the map information from the Satelites.  This isn't always the most fun thing in the world, so leave your GPS system on for 20 minutes or so.  This should help your GPS system to download all of the information it needs.  If you're in a rental car, let your GPS system know which part of the world you're in before asking it to do too much.

2.  Make sure your voice selection is the right one.

"Turn left in 500 feet" is a little too precise for some people; they'd prefer that they simple hear the street name.  Before you start driving, make sure that your GPS system is set to the right voice selection and/or options.  Before you make the purchase of your GPS, make sure that it actually has the voice options you'll want - you don't want to get home and realize that you're stuck with the wrong thing!

3.  Save your current location.

GPS Magazine teaches you how to do this with the various brands.  Why would you want to save your location?  If you've found a great place to eat at, or need to remember a shopping spot for future reference, you can quickly save it into your GPS and never wonder where its location is again.

GPS is a fun, smooth operation - once you've got it working right.  Make sure you do plenty of research ahead of time before you make your purchase and you should be familiar with the options you'll be getting.  Just make sure you know how to let the GPS system run smoothly once you're ready to drive it home.
